‘Scene’ in Nottingham again 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

The junction of Milton Street and Upper Parliament Street in Nottingham must be  one of the most heavily bussed junctions in the country.

So much so that at one time the pollution levels were too high.

This was one of the reasons that ‘Nottingham City Transport’ (NCT) chose to purchase a fleet of gas powered Scania/Alexander buses in an effort to reduce the pollution levels.

With ‘NCT’ having colour based route branding, it leads to a very colourful scene.

The building to the right is Nottingham’s Victoria Shopping Centre. Built largely on the site of the old Nottingham Victoria Railway station which was opened in 1900 by the Great Central and Great Northern Railways.

For part one see blog published 03/03/2020.

‘Scene’ In Sheffield. ‘Powells Bus Co. Ltd’ 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

So after our travels in Europe, it is time to return to transport activities in the UK.

I am still posting blogs on a daily basis until the end of the current period of lockdown (December 2nd).

However due to the existing restrictions in the last few months, at least for a time my blogs will take on an historical appearance.

This is simply because of the lack of opportunity (during the current restrictions) to see what is new or different and with the cancellation of rallies and the closure of museums etc.

For years I knew them as ‘Powells of Hellaby’.  Hellaby being part of the South Yorkshire town of Rotherham.

‘Powells’ were a well known independent bus operator until the company was bought by the ‘HCT Group’ in 2018.

‘HCT Group’ has its roots in ‘Hackney Community Transport’ based in North London.

For part one see blog posted 29/10/2020.

‘Scene’ at Munich Airport (MUC) 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

So, like all other holidays, this one came to an end with our departure from Munich Airport.

It was the first time I had flown with ‘Lufthansa’. Who were very good, I couldn’t fault them.

Flights on time, cabin service excellent. Staff very helpful.

The big surprise about Munich Airport is how big it is.

The second largest in Germany after Frankfurt and eighth biggest in Europe.

Very busy even on a Wednesday afternoon.

Blogs covering our journey to Munich from Manchester were posted on 09/06/2020 and 30/06/2020.

Readers seeking further details on particular aircraft are recommended to Google the aircraft type and the c/n. ie. Airbus A319-114 c/n 853.

‘Scene’ (yet again) in Seefeld, Austria on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Continuing my blog a day until the end of the current ‘lockdown’.

I hope you are enjoying them.

Seefeld is where we stayed in Austria. At something approaching 4,000 feet above sea level it made for crisp frosty mornings even in early Autumn..

The town lies on the OBB’s (Austrian Federal Railways) railway line linking Innsbruck with Munich and surprisingly is mainly single line.

Very much a tourism town these days and although there is a railway station.

Most tourists seem to arrive by road.

‘Scene’ at Jenbach Railway Station, Austria on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Jenbach Railway Station is the only location in Austria where railways of three different gauges meet.

The standard gauge ‘Austrian Federal Railways’ (OBB) runs West to Innsbruck and on into Western Switzerland and East to Vienna and Hungary.

There are also connections North into Germany and South into Italy.

The Metre gauge ‘Zillertalbahn’ (ZB) runs South up the Ziller valley to terminate at Mayerhofen.

The 760mm. gauge ‘Achenseebahn’ (AB) runs North to terminate outside the village of Pertisau alongside lake Achensee.

I understand that the ‘W & L’ have negotiated with the ‘ZB’ a 2 year lease of a steam loco to run with the coaches.
