‘Scene’ in Bakewell once more on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

When I first got into transport blogging nearly eight years ago, I travelled around my local cities and towns within a 30 mile radius from home gathering images to write and post about.

Bakewell featured in a number of early posts but for whatever reason has not done so in recent times.

A busy town and an important agricultural centre that has developed as a tourist attraction in its own right.

Many of those tourists arrive by bus and coach.

There are terminating services from Derby, Chesterfield and Sheffield. A through service from Buxton to Derby and a wide variety of routes serving local villages.

Coaches come from far and wide.

My favourite spot is just outside the ‘Rutland Arms Hotel’ with buses and coaches coming from three directions. Brilliant!

The operator who provides most local services and the one to Chesterfield is ‘Hulleys of Baslow’ who this year celebrate the 100 years that have passed since Henry Hulley founded the company in 1921.

Regular reader/viewers of my blog will know that the vehicles of ‘Hulleys’ have appeared on my blog on many occasions this year.

For part 1 see blog posted 12/12/2021.

All the images in this blog are of buses registered to subsidiaries of the ‘Go-Ahead’ group.

I have been taking photographs of buses in Oxford for some years and I have always been fortunate in having dry weather.

This particular day was in late autumn with a clear and sunny sky.

The only problem is that Oxford is a historic city with narrow streets and many tall buildings which between them create a variety difficulties with shadows.

As always, it is all about making the best of what you have.

I hope you enjoy this selection.

I have long been an admirer of ‘Wrightbus’ Eclipse Gemini body which is built on a variety of chassis.

The ‘normal’ appearance is that of a high domed roof.

For a number or reasons, some operators wanted a lower version with an almost flat roof.

Whilst it is still an attractive bus to my eyes, the lower height seems to completely change the character of the bus.

‘Scene’ in Edinburgh once more 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Christmas seems to start earlier each year. I think probably the second week in August saw the first adverts on television.

Still it’s here at last so let me take this opportunity to wish all of you as Happy a Christmas as government advice and restrictions will allow.

Friend Stuart Montgomery, one of ‘Lothian Buses’ volunteer photographers has recently forwarded several more of his images which I think are superb.

Before we get into the low roofed buses, I will start with a high roofed one to illustrate the difference.

‘Scene’ at the Buses Festival 2021. When ‘Paul S. Winson’ met ‘Todmorden Joint Omnibus Commitee’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

The annual ‘Buses Festival’ this year was held at the ‘East of England Showground’ which is near Peterborough.

It was the first time I have attended the show and considering the amount of national publicity that has been lavished on it I was disappointed with the number of vehicles in attendance.

Whilst most of the attendees were preserved vehicles, there were some current buses and coaches on display.

The quality of vehicles that did attend was good particularly on a day which was interrupted by rain and dark clouds on a regular basis.

I think that an event held in the East Midlands will always have difficulties in attracting large numbers of participants.

The problem being that the venue is so far from most major centres of population.

Time will tell.

The ‘Birmingham & Midland Motor Omnibus’ Co. (BMMO) was one of the great bus companies which spread right across the midlands both east and west and even into Wales.

‘Midland Red’ as it was better known is no longer with us having been broken up when the ‘National Bus Company’ was sold off.

Now long gone, some of the buses that served the company survive.

For many years the company built its own buses.

Wetmore Road for those who don’t know is where the fleet of ‘Midland Classic of Burton’ (MC) is garaged.

Over the weekend of 28/29th August 2021 ‘MC’ held a Heritage Weekend to celebrate two anniversaries.

On the Saturday to celebrate 15 years of ‘MC’ operating in Burton.

On the Sunday to celebrate the 95th. anniversary of John Stevenson setting up in business to run buses between Burton and Uttoxeter via Tutbury.

A route that ‘MC’ still operates today.

I still remember a visit to Spath where ‘Stevensons’ depot at the time was.

If memory serves me right the company appeared under the name of ‘Stevensons of Spath’ in the listings in ‘Buses Illustrated’ as it was at the time.
