‘Scene’ once more at Trowell Junction on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Friend Peter Rose was out for his daily walk yesterday and was able to capture this small selection of locomotives.

The images together with the operational details reproduced here are with his permission for which I thank him.

Trowell Junction lies at the bottom end of the Erewash Valley line just to the South of Ilkeston station.

The main line continues South through Toton yard whilst the Nottingham line branches off to the East.

Allegedly 20007 is the oldest diesel loco (built in 1957) with a main line ticket.

20142 carries a ‘London Transport’ livery.

‘Scene’ at the Midland Railway Trust (MRT). Class 20’s at Butterley on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

The Class 20 locomotives of ‘British Railways’ or ‘British Rail’ (BR) as it became were built to an English Electric design by both English Electric at Newton-le-Willows and by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn at Darlington between 1957 to 1968.

One of the more successful of the early diesels, the class totalling 228 is still widely seen both in preservation and still in service.

‘Scene’ on the Wensleydale Railway at Leeming Bar on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Leeming Bar station lies on what was the North Eastern Railway’s (NER) line from Northallerton on the East Coast Main Line to Garsdale on the West Coast Main Line.

Never more than a useful cross country link, the line was closed in 1982. There were the occasional excursion trains until 1990 when the Wensleydale Railway Assosciation was formed with the intention of restoring passenger services on the line.

Today a preserved railway, the Wensleydale Railway (WR) operates between Northallerton West and Redmire a distance of 22 miles.

Running started in 2003 between Leeming Bar and Leyburn eventially extending eastward to Northallerton West and westward to Redmire from where the Ministry of Defence uses the line to transport Armoured Fighting Vehicles to and from Catterick Camp.

What was the station yard is now ‘home’ to a variety of stock.

Preserved in the1960’s 69023 has been around many of the heritage railways before coming to the ‘WR’.

Built at Derby, this former British Rail’ Mark 2a coach being classified as a TSO (Tourist Second Open).

All the operational coaches on the day I was there were carrying this red and cream livery which approximates to the old BR ‘Carmine and Cream’ livery dating back to the 1950’s.

In addition, they all carried girls names.

‘Scene’ at the Midland Railway Centre Butterley today 8th. February 2015

The normal rolling stock for this time of year is this preserved ‘British Rail’ Class 141. No 113 being one of 20 that were ordered in 1984.

They were the first production order for the ‘Pacer’ type that were derived from the Leyland National bus.

Seen in the livery of ‘West Yorkshire PTE’ who were a major user.

Initially notoriously unreliable at the start of their lives they were modified by Hunslet-Barclay in the late 1980’s and performance improved.

They did not last long in service however although some units were exported to Iran.

The later and closely related Class 142’s are still in regular daily service across mainly Northern England.

141 113

Normally, such mundane fare would not get me out of the house on a Sunday afternoon.

However, the rumour mill, according to my son Andrew had it that there were going to be a number of Class 20 locomotives working turn and turn about with the Class 141.

The reason for their appearance was seemingly that one or more had had extensive work done and a bit of ‘running in’ was required before it or they were despatched elsewhere.

The rumour mill was correct.

So the many people who had turned up were treated to 20 048 and 20 205 in BR Blue livery and 20 189 in the livery of Balfour Beatty who had been using the loco on various railway related duties.

It is interesting that these 50 year old loco’s are still in demand because there hardly seems to be a week go by without a report in the railway press about one of there number being leased out for further work on the system.

Long may it continue !!
