‘Scene’ at Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum. ‘The East Yorkshire Connection’ on Dennis Basford’srailsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

A recent day out took friend Peter Rose and myself into pastures new when the transport delights of ‘Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum’ were explored

As we have done before, we have combined all the images we gathered on the day.

The credits being joint D.Basford/P.M.Rose.

One of the elements of going to somewhere like a museum where you have an idea what you are going to see is that it is always interesting to see what else just turns up.

It is two years since friend Peter Rose and I last visited the GCR.

A good selection of trains both steam and diesel were running.

However, our main purpose, now as then, was to see and photograph the entrants in the bus rally held at Quorn & Woodhouse station.

‘Scene’ at ‘Beamish, the Living Museum of the North,’ The Buses on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

I had never been before and I did not know what to expect, but seeing as the visit was included as an excursion in a holiday package, I had nothing to lose.

My main interest, as might be expected were the transport exhibits but it must be said that there is much more of interest that is worth looking at and, experiencing.

I found myself using the public transport exhibits to access what else is available.

After arriving and entering the complex, there were trams running both clockwise and anti clockwise together with buses running anti clockwise.

One of the buses is fitted with a tail lift for wheelchair based passengers.

They carry you to the various locations where activities; such as the village, the farm, the mine, the railway station the tram and bus depots plus others are located.

I did several circuits of the site on the trams and buses before deciding where I wanted to go.

I found it best to be selective because there is so much to see and do.

It would be difficult to get everything done in any depth on one day.

The Museum has a wide range of trams and buses available to them so on any given day the lineup may vary from the day I visited.

‘Scene’ at Transpire’s Peak Park Bus Gathering 2022 /3 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

For some years now, this event has been held at the ‘Peak Rail’ site at Rowsley in Derbyshire.

There was plenty of room for the 35 or so buses the event attracted together with the added bonus of the trains provided by ‘Peak Rail’.

This year being steam only.

A return to the traditional June date was welcome because last year the event was held in August due to the problems caused by the Covid 19 pandemic.

on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

One of three, CRU 101C No. 101 and CRU 102C No. 102 being the other two.

They were fitted with what were called ‘Dual Purpose’ seating.

Not quite up to full coach standard but better than the usual bus seats.

Usually in a bus body shell.

They were used as buses most of the time but could be drafted in to support the coach fleet when required.

The pattern of taking holidays in the 1960’s was different to today.

These days, coach holidays have the coach providing transport to and from the resort and staying in the resort to provide excursions during the holiday.

In the 60’s, people booked their own accomodation in a resort and then booked with a coach or bus company to provide the transport to the resort.

Saturday was ‘changeover day’ when resort coach parks would be very busy.

I have seen the coach parks in Skegness, Llandudno and other places rammed with coaches and often buses delivering and collecting passengers.

Almost anything that could turn a wheel was sometimes used.

A way of working that has gone but they were very interesting times for enthusiasts.

The RTs were ‘London Transport’s standard double decker of the late 1930s, through the 40s and 50s.

They worked alongside AEC Routemasters during the 1960s and 70s.

Built by AEC in London, Leyland in Lancashire, Weymann in Birmingham, Cravens in Sheffield and Saunders Roe on the Isle of Anglesey they were produced in their thousands.

The last one not being withdrawn until 1979.
