‘Scene’ at the ‘Statfold Barn Railway’ (SBR) Buses 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

For those who do not know the ‘SBR,’ it is located near Tamworth in Staffordshire.

A privately owned, multi gauge railway system which was operating at least seven locomotives and a tram on the day we were there.

There is also an extensive museum devoted to narrow gauge railway locomotives and artefacts.

Usually holding three running days per year (Spring, Summer and Autumn); buses, cars, Land Rovers, lorries, military vehicles and steam engines also featured.

Both friend Peter Rose and I found it to be an excellent day out.

‘Barton Transport’ was one of the major independent bus operators in the East Midlands.

Eventually becoming part of the ‘Wellglade’ group of companies.

Always known for their style and flair when it came to buying buses, this is but one example.

For those readers who don’t fully understand what a lowbridge body was.

It was a way of building double deck bus bodies to a lower overall height. Generally, a foot or thereabouts lower.

What would have been the centre aisle upstairs was moved to the offside and dropped into the downstairs saloon.

It intruded over the offside downstairs seats and was ready made for banging heads on when leaving seats.

Upstairs, the two pairs of seats were replaced by one seat that seated 4 people.

It was a most uncomfortable arrangement where you could finish up climbing over the other passengers seated with you.

Fortunately, this arrangement came to an end with the introduction of the drop centre rear axle which I think debuted on the Bristol Lodekka.

So allowing conventional 2X2 upstairs seating in a low overall height bus.

’Scene’ Down Memory Lane in Bournemouth 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

These days, I suppose that the majority of photographers store their images on hard drives on various computers, tablets etc.

So it was with some surprise that I recently discovered some of my older images in that most familiar of storage locations, an old shoe box.

All of the images were taken on film in the days before I had graduated to automatic digital cameras so any slight focus or colour problems are due entirely to me.

So enjoy this selection dating back many years.
