‘Scene’ at ‘Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum’ West Yorkshire Trolleybuses 2 on Dennis Basford’srailsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

A recent day out took friend Peter Rose and myself into pastures new when the transport delights of ‘Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum’ were explored.

As we have done before, we have combined all the images we gathered on the day.

The credits being joint D.Basford/P.M.Rose.

The early years of the third decade of this century has seen a rush to electric traction for buses albeit with the extensive use of batteries to store the electricity.

Many of the younger generation may not realise that the rush to electric traction for buses originally started in the 1920s and 30s and peaked in the 1950s.

At that time the electricity came down wires that required a lot of overhead infrastructure and numbers of support poles to get it to the buses.

That was part of the downfall of the trolleybus because it was expensive to construct and expensive to replace when time expired.

It was unsightly and just imagine getting planning permission for getting more of it erected these days.

The trolleybus, then, was a bit of a blind alley but it is fondly remembered by many who grew up with it for its cleanliness and quietness.

Hence the numbers of people who turn up regularly to see and to ride.

Many modern day operators would be delighted to see the queues that formed for the experience..

The only downside to the museum has to be its location which is on the Isle of Axholme northeast of Doncaster.

Just in Lincolnshire and as such, literally, miles from any substantial centre of population.

New to ‘Mexborough & Swinton’ No. 30 In 1948 with a Brush single deck body.

Re-bodied by EL in 1962.

It has the distinction of being the very last trolleybus of its generation in service.

I say that because ‘South Yorkshire PTE’ built a prototype trolleybus in the 1980s registered C45 HDT, number 2450.

Referred to as an ‘Electroliner’ it utilised an Alexander ‘R’ type body.

Although trialled, it came to nothing and it was eventually transferred to Sandtoft.

I actually saw it on an earlier visit but where it is now, I do not know.

‘Scene’ at Showbus Another Delectation of Double Deckers on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

I have attended a number of SHOWBUS events over the years but this was the first time I had attended one at the Hertfordshire County Showgound.

The 50th. show and, if we are to believe what we read, the last.

It would be a great pity if the reputation the SHOWBUS name has built up over the years were to be lost but we shall have to wait and see.

I was talking to a friend recently who follows the blog and he did not realise that by double clicking on the image here it comes up on my flickr page in a larger form.

It would be a great pity if the reputation the SHOWBUS name has built up over the years were to be lost but we shall have to wait and see.

‘London Country Bus Services Ltd’ were the successors to the ‘Green Line’ operation of ‘London Transport’.

It came into being when on January 1st. 1970, all ‘Green Line’ services were transferred to the new, nationalised, Transport Holding Company.

In the early 1960s, ‘London Transport’ were heavily committed to half cab RT and RM double deckers.

The Leyland Atlantean and Daimler Fleetline had already built up a wide following across the rest of the country, so ‘London Transport’ ordered small batches of both models for trials purposes.

XF1 (Experimental Fleetline) being the first of its kind.

Usually held at a weekend, they also include visits to operators and other bus related venues for the attending members to visit and enjoy.

This year, the location was in my part of the world, the East Midlands.

The fifth and final visit of this second day was to the two premises of ‘Marshalls of Sutton on Trent’, an operator I have long admired but always found elusive.

At the first ‘Marshalls’ site we were welcomed by Mr. John Marshall and he accompanied us to the second site aboard the beautiful Duple bodied Daimler seen in part 1.

‘Scene’ on a PSV Circle Organised Visit ‘Nottingham Heritage Vehicle Charity (NHVC) 2’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Usually held at a weekend, they also include visits to operators and other bus related venues for the attending members to visit and enjoy.

This year, the location was in my part of the world, the East Midlands.

The first visit was to the ‘NHVC’ which is based in what was the ‘Trent Motor Traction’ depot in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.

The group have an excellent website which I would recommend to anyone requiring further details.

I have previously posted blogs featuring the ‘NHVC’ on 29/04/2019, 21/01/2020, 26/01/2020, 05/02/2020 and 17/03/2020 so I feel I have pretty well covered the main exhibits.

However, the ‘NHVC’ has a reserve collection of buses that are awaiting preservation work.

These are located on an industrial estate nearby.

No doubt that in time and with further funding, some of these will buses will move to Hucknall.

In the mid 1970’s, ‘NCT’ took delivery of a batch of buses for use on park & ride services from a number of sites around the city.

Unusual at the time, being Duple Dominant coach bodies fitted with standard bus seats.

As supplied, they were painted lilac and marketed as ‘Lilac Leopards’.

The intention was to phase traffic lights into the city to give these services priority, so speeding the journey.

Park & ride was a new concept at that time and it became obvious that the citizens of Nottingham did not want it so the scheme was abandoned.
