‘Scene’ in Bristol 1 Express Coaches on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

For what was our last transport themed outing of the year, friend Peter Rose and I had a day in Bristol.

The day was dominated by a clear blue autumn sky and long shadows.

Not ideal conditions, but as always, we do our best.

For the first time, we have combined all the images we have taken so the credits are joint D.Basford/P.M.Rose.

If my Portuguese is correct, Boa Vista translates as ‘good view’.

Rather apt for a double deck coach!

‘Scene’ on a PSV Circle Organised Visit ‘Skills’ 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

The PSV Circle (of which I have been a member for some years) aims to hold an Annual General Meeting in a different location in the UK every year. (Covid permitting).

Usually held at a weekend, they also include visits to operators and other bus related venues for the attending members to visit and enjoy.

This year, the location was in my part of the world, the East Midlands.

Skills’ was the provider of our transport for the day and their base at Bulwell in Nottingham was to be our first visit of this the third day.

BV67 JZM ‘Whippet Coaches’, Cambridge ’27'. Scania K410EB6 / Caetano Levante 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

A bit of a mystery.

I know that since being new to ‘Whippet’, it has been on contract to

‘national express’ (nx).

My guess is that with ‘nx’ cancelling all of their services during the most recent  Covid-19 lockdown, the coach has had its branding removed and it is employed by ‘Whippet’ on whatever work can be found for it.

A good policy, because no coach is earning its keep if it’s sat in the depot.

The 27 above and behind the door is  I think a carry over from when it worked on (nx) contracts.

The service No. 005 is not one that ‘nx’ uses.

So, where has it come from, where is it going to and who for?

‘Scene’ in Llandudno

Llandudno is one of my favourite seaside towns being tucked up at the side of the Great Orme and it is probably the Great Orme Tramway that most people think of when the subject of transport in the town crops up.

Built for the purpose of carrying passengers and goods up and down the Great Orme. Including coffins for burial in St. Tudno’s churchyard on the Orme. The authorising Act of Parliament was passed in 1898. Construction started in 1901 and the first fare paying passenger was carried in 1902 but only as far as the halfway station because at that time, the top half had not yet been completed. That came in July 1903.

Although much has changed, here we see car No.5 about to depart from the Victoria station at Church Walks in Llandudno.

Great Orme Tram No. 5

While the Tramway goes up the Orme, there is a regular service around the Orme. Over the years it has been run by a variety of buses but on this day it was in the hands of,

WND 477

A Leyland Tiger Cub with Duple Britannia bodywork dating from 1958.

New to ‘Spencer’s of Manchester it joined its current operator ‘Alpine Travel’ of Llandudno in 2000.

If memory serves me right , I think ‘Spencer’s were a company that after mergers and take overs eventually became the ‘Shearings’ of today.

WND 477

D244 FYM

A Leyland Olympian with Eastern Coach Works body again in the employ of ‘Alpine Travel’. This part open topper runs a regular tour that includes Llandudno, Llandudno Junction, Deganwy and across the River to Conwy.

In an earlier employment, fully roofed, it worked for ‘Arriva London’ as its L 244.

Another open topper with ‘Alpine Travel’ which again has a London connection in that it worked for ‘Go-Ahead London’ as PVL 72 before coming to North Wales.

A Scania K440 with Caetano Levante bodywork.

A coach who’s legal titling gives the operator as ‘Apollo’ from Tamworth in Staffordshire.

Previously it has been with ‘Bruce’s Coaches ‘of Shotts in Scotland on ‘National Express' duties and has had a spell with ‘Edinburgh Coach Lines’ on hire to ‘citylink/megabus.com’ and to ‘West Coast Motors’ of Campbeltown.

A widely travelled vehicle.

A VDL SB200CS with Wright Pulsar 2 bodywork working on service 5 to Bangor which then works through to Caernarfon.

This route is branded as the ‘Coastliner’. The wording for which is low down on the panelling behind the rear wheel. It is a good service and well used. Why the ‘branding’ is where it is beats me. Surely it should be at the front where people can see it...!

‘Six leggers’ ‘Scene’ at Showbus 2014

I have always had an attraction to 6 wheel buses and coaches. Its something about their size and the power that they convey.

I am too young to remember the pre war Leyland Gnu which like the Bedford VAL which I can remember from the 1960’s had the extra axle at the front.

I also remember 6 wheel trolleybuses in both Rotherham and London in the 1950’s so maybe its the nostalgia that draws me to them.

Whatever the reason, there was plenty to enjoy at last years Showbus.

A coach guaranteed to catch anyone’s eye.

WLT 868

An Optare Olympus bodied coach working for ‘Go-Coach’. It was formerly with ‘Classic Coaches’ of Anfield Plain, Stanley, County Durham.

The registration is interesting in that it was originally carried by Routemaster RM868 which after its service in London was reportedly exported to Sweden in 1998. It was further reported that it was repatriated in 2013.

The partially faired in rear wheels is a touch unusual.
