‘Scene’ On the Roads in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Friend Peter Rose recently returned from holiday based in Hebden Bridge.

An attractive market town set in the valley of the river Calder which shares the steeply sided narrow valley with the Rochdale Canal, the A646 road and the railway line linking Manchester with Bradford and other parts of West Yorkshire.

Because of its location the town does have flooding problems that with the effects of global warming will probably get worse.

‘Scene’ Once More in Edinburgh on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

Something of a bonus blog.

Earlier this year, ’Lothian Buses’ took delivery of a substantial number of Volvo B5TL buses with Alexander Dennis Ltd. Enviro 400MMC bodies.

Numbered from 601 to 650.

The B5TL being the replacement for Volvo’s B9TL.

It is interesting to note that with the availability of alternative power sources i.e. Hydrogen, Gas, Electricity etc. that ‘Lothian’ is still buying diesel powered buses in some numbers.

A further batch numbered from 651 to 698 are being delivered at the moment  and across the rest of this year.

As usual, friend Stuart Montgomery who is one of ’Lothian Buses’ volunteer photographers has been out to welcome them to Edinburgh and his images are reproduced here with his approval and my thanks.

The colours used are the same as for the two earlier images pictured above.

However, the different proportions in their application makes the bus seem much brighter and cleaner.

This styling was probably the best that half cab bus styling ever got.

In the late 1950s the ‘Birmingham & Midland Motor Omnibus’ Co. (Midland Red) had been building their own buses.

One of the features was a full width panel at the front, hiding the radiator and blending in the wings.

They asked Leyland if they could produce something similar for the front of buses the company had on order.

This was Leyland’s answer.

The blank space between the vertical openings just below the Leyland badge was created to house the stylised initials BMMO.

Obviously, other operators wanted something different.

In this case they have used what appears to be the City of Leicester’s coat of arms.

Known as ‘tin fronts’.

Suddenly AEC, Daimler, Guy, Alexander and others adopted what had virtually become a fashion item.

‘Scene’ in North Norfolk’ 1 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Friend Peter Rose recently spent some time on the ‘North Norfolk Railway’ (NNR) where he captured these images.

As regular readers/viewers will know Peter’s work appears regularly on the blog with his permission and my thanks.

For further and fuller details of any of the locomotives featured in this blog, Google ‘British Preserved Steam Locomotives’ followed by the loco number.

On 02/10/2014, I posted a blog re the ‘NNR’ in which I went into some detail regarding the rolling stock on the line. Particularly the coaches.

For anyone interested, it is still available.

I have seen and ridden behind this loco in the past but it never looked as good as this!

In 1923, it became ‘LNER’ Class J15 No. 7564 later being re-numbered 5462 and then became No. 65462 under ‘British Railways’ ownership.

Finally withdrawn in 1963 coming to the ‘NNR’ in June 1967.

The class  was originally constructed by the ‘Great Eastern Railway’ commencing in 1912 as Class S69 which were also known as Class1500.

8572 was one of the last batch built for the ‘LNER’ in 1928.

It became No. 61572 in 1948 when the LNER was Nationalised and became part of ‘British Railways’.

Withdrawn in 1961 it eventually arrived on the ‘NNR’ in 1967.

The abreviation ‘quad/art’ means ‘Quadruple Articulated’.

Basically four coaches carried on five bogies.

See my blog posted 02/10/2014 for more details.

The final vehicle in the rake is a four wheeled former LNER pigeon van which is used to carry cycles for those wishing to continue their journey on two wheels.

The ownership of which was joint with the ‘London & South Western Railway’ sharing with the ‘Midland’.

At the grouping in 1923, the new owners were the ‘LMS’ and ‘Southern Railway’.

Built in 1925 by Robert Stephenson and Co. it later became No. 13809 in LMS livery and No. 53809 under ‘British Railways’.

Withdrawn in 1964.

The 4 wheel van to which it is coupled is provided for the carriage of cycles on the train.

‘Scene’ in Chatsworth Park, Derbyshire 3 Visitors on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

There cannot be many readers / viewers of my blog who are unaware that 2021 marks the 100th. anniversary of the founding of ‘Hulleys of Baslow’.

It had been intended to mount a bus rally in Chatsworth nearer to the original anniversary date but this was set back to September 26th. 2021 because of the Covid-19 crisis.

The buses I saw on the day split nicely into,

Those owned by ‘Hulleys’, preserved buses and those that were visiting or passing through.

I do not claim that those pictured were the only buses on display because there were others that were out visiting elsewhere that I would have missed.
