‘Scene’ at the East Midlands Airport again on Dennis Basford’srailsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Something I mention from time to time, for the benefit of new readers/viewers.

Is that if you were to single click on any image in these blogs, it will take you to my ‘Flickr’ page where the image you have clicked is available to view in a larger format enabling details to be viewed more clearly.

A visit to the EMA at Castle Donington on the borders of Derbyshire and Leicestershire to see the freight aircraft come and go, has become one of mine and friend John Beastall’s (who, incidentally, supplied all the aircraft details) little pleasures in life.

I like freighters.

They are often older former passenger airliners that have been converted when their passenger flying days are done.

That said, there are numbers of new build aircraft joining the ranks.

If there is a downside, it is the knowledge that much of the freight they bring into the country are goods and products that in years gone by we would have, as a nation, produced for ourselves.

Anyone seeking further details of the aircraft are advised to type the second line details of type and c/n into Google and go to the ‘planespotters.net’ entry.

‘Scene’ at the East Midlands Airport. Boeing 737 freighters on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

WOW, rails, roads and runways blogs all in seven days. It’s a long time since that happened!

The first ‘runways’ blog then for well over a year and all due to Covid-19.

Whilst passenger services have plummeted because of the pandemic, freight traffic has rocketed so not surprisingly, this blog illustrates freighters.

Many thanks go to friend John Beastall who provided all the identification and operational details.

Readers seeking further details on particular aircraft are recommended to Google the aircraft registration. e.g. G-NPTA.

I then go to ‘www.airfleets.net'

On the day, the aircraft taxied out to take off from Manchester’s second runway.

It then stopped for some time prior to getting to the runway, then taxied as if to take off.

It stopped again for quite a while and eventually returned to the terminal.

That was the last I saw of it. Presumably some technical problem.

It first flew in October 1999 as HB-IGZ (Switzerland) since then has worked mainly on the Italian register.

‘Scene’ at Manchester International Airport (MIA) 1 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Thanks go to friend John Beastall who provided much of the information accompanying the images.

For those of you who are familiar with the spectators area at ‘MIA’ you will be aware of the viewing mounds that were put in some years ago to enable photographs to be taken over the fencing topped off with wire.

Well the first image below shows what was the location of the left hand and best of the two mounds. It has become the site of an executive terminal which effectively blocks the view of the apron and much of the runway.

If you are thinking of visiting and intend taking photographs, you have only the right hand mound to work from so, take a step ladder.

Registration recorders are OK, they can read registrations through the fencing.

For photographers, it is very disappointing.

‘Scene’, Freighting at the East Midlands Airport (EMA) part 1 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

I have been a regular visitor to the East Midlands Airport at Castle Donington since it opened in 1964.

Much has changed. Freight provides a large part of the movements at the airport and freight requires freighters.

Early to late evening is probably the best time to see the comings and goings taking place.

‘DHL’ have a massive facilty at the EMA at the West end of the runway whilst ‘UPS’ are based East of the passenger buildings and apron.

The other operators featured use either the ‘DHL’ or ‘UPS’ bases.

Thanks to friend John Beastall for all the additional infiormation.

‘Scene’ at Manchester International Airport. ‘Thomson/Tui’ on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Todays ‘Thomson/Tui’ airline has its beginnings in 1962 with a company called ‘Euravia’ which at that time flew Lockheed Constellations on holiday charters.

The name ‘Britannia Airways’ (BA) was adopted in 1964 when former BOAC Bristol Britannia 102’s joined the fleet.

In 1965 ‘BA’ became part of the ‘Thomson’ group. A Canadian owned company.

In 2000 ‘Thomson’ and ‘BA’ were purchased by ‘Preussag’ AG (Tui group) of Germany.

The ‘Thomson’, ‘Thomson Airways’ & ‘Thomsonfly’ names have continued to appear on aircraft but the ‘Tui’ titling is now replacing them.

The current fleet comprised Boeing 737’s, Boeing 757’s, Boeing 767’s and Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s.
