A Father’s Day outing courtesy of son Andrew saw us both at the Show and Museum for the first time in many years.

Apart from aeroplanes, airshows also attract buses and coaches!

‘Scene’ in Bakewell once more on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

It is now the middle of March 2023 and the days are getting longer, warmer, drier and brighter (or so I kid myself).

Time to come out of hibernation and look at what the world has to offer.

One of my favourite spots for bus photography is Bakewell’s Rutland Square.

You may not  be aware that by double clicking the images below that they can also be viewed on my ‘Flickr’ pages in a larger format.

A lovely bus.

My view of all the variations on the Enviro400 body styling, 400MMC, 400City, 400EV etc. is that this, the earliest, is the most stylish. Somehow all of the others look a bit like a caricature.

‘Scene’ in Burton-on-Trent, ‘Midland Classic of Burton’ (MC) on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

All the buses pictured here carry full ‘MC’ livery and legal identification but since the take over at the start of August, are owned by ‘Diamond Buses (East Midlands) Ltd’.

The images were all taken on 19/08/22 and although some of the subjects may have appeared previously in my blogs, I include them again as a record of what I saw on the day.

Within my own system of identifying images, I normally use the ownership of the vehicle as far as I know it.

On this occasion, out of respect for the company that I have followed for many years I will use ‘Midland Classic’.

‘Scene’ On a Day Out ‘On The Buses’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Some years ago, I wrote a series of articles about days out by bus in my part of the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.

Meant to be a guide for the perhaps less confident intending passenger of what to catch to where and at what time.

The series was published bi-monthly by a local magazine and ran for a number of years.

This blog seeks to replicate the ‘days out by bus’ element but this time looking at the buses that were used on the day.

This article starts and finishes in my home town of Ripley in Derbyshire, continues to Nottingham then on to Mansfield where a short break was taken.

Next was Chesterfield, Bakewell, Matlock and then Alfreton.

All the images illustrated except one were captured as we progressed.

Accompanied by friend Peter Rose, it was quite a day.

So why don’t you join us?

The first bus on a very cold but bright and sunny day.

The 09-45 from Ripley to Nottingham.

The piece of road the bus is running on has its own place in history.

From 1913 to 1933 a tramway ran from Ripley to Nottingham ran along this road.

The trams known as ‘The Ripley Rattlers’ had a reputation for being

“the most dangerous tram route in Britain”.

It was also one of the longest.

The trams painted blue and cream ran on a single track that had 316 loops where trams could pass.

The trams were replaced by trolleybuses and in turn by diesel buses now painted in the blue of the ‘Midland General Omnibus Company.’

They were the forerunners of todays ‘trentbarton’ who still use the same colour for its buses on the route.

Perhaps surprisingly, the rails are still there buried under several inches of tarmac.

On two occasions when the local council has dug the road up, I have seen and photographed them.

‘Scene’ on Wetmore Road, Burton on Trent (BoT) Again on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Wetmore Road, for those who don’t know, is where the fleet of

‘Midland Classic of Burton’ (‘MC’) is garaged.

Over the weekend of 28/29th August 2021 ‘MC’ held a ‘Heritage Weekend’ to celebrate two anniversaries.

On the Saturday to celebrate 15 years of ‘mc’ operating in Burton.

On the Sunday to celebrate the 95th. anniversary of John Stevenson setting up in business to run buses between Burton and Uttoxeter via Tutbury.

A route that ‘mc’ still operates today.

An interesting ‘tableau’ mounted outside the offices at Wetmore Road is made up from a model bus and a piece of railway track.

The model bus is of one of London Transport’s ‘LT’ class double deckers more commonly known as the New Routemaster but painted in ‘mc’ livery.

‘mc’ have and still do operate former ‘LT’ deckers so it must be quite conceivable that when the buses are retired from London some might well come to Burton.

Time will tell!

The railway track is a piece of rail from the ‘Burton & Ashby Light Railway’ which ran between the towns of Burton on Trent and Ashby de la Zouch from 1906.

Taken over by the ‘Midland Railway’ in 1923, it became part of the ‘LMS’ in 1923 until its closure in 1927.

Another relic of the line, car No. 14, was exported to Detroit, USA from where it was repatriated in 2014.

It currently resides at the ‘Statfold Barn Railway’ which is not all that far away from its old haunts.

‘Scene’ in Burton-on-Trent (BoT) once more 1 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

It is now about 18 months since I last went to ‘BoT’ so it was time for a revisit.

Well then, what has changed in that time?

The elderly Wright bodied VDL’s that were inherited from ‘ARRIVA’ seem to have gone.

Also, sadly the Optare Spectra seems to have gone as well.

The Optare Metrocity’s and the buses on the X12 to Lichfield have acquired revised liveries.

Two buses I knew when they were with ‘yourbus’ have joined the fleet and a new style of company fleet name has been adopted.

So, last first. The revised fleet name.

‘Midland Classic of Burton’ revised fleet name

on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

Smart, sharp and I think the black and red show up well against the yellow background.

The white ‘of Burton’ seems to get a bit lost against the yellow but it looks stronger on the revised liveries on the Metrocities’s and the X12’s.

Maybe the ‘of Burton’ could have given the town’s name ‘of Burton on Trent’ or as appears on the X12’s ‘Burton upon Trent’.

After all, the company operates well beyond the boundaries of the town.

Anyway, I like it, what do you think!

‘Midland Classic of Burton’ revised fleet name on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

For a fleet with around around 20 double deck buses, there is a surprising variety in that number.

Wright Gemini bodied Volvo VDL 250DB’s, Dennis Tridents with Alexander Dennis Ltd. Enviro 400 bodies, Scania N94UD’s and N270UD’s with Optare, East Lancs and Scania bodies and a solitary Routemaster.

In the preserved fleet there is a Leyland Olympian with Alexander bodywork and a MCW Metrobus.
