‘Scene’ at ‘Bournemouth Corporation Transport’s Mallard Road depot on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

It is with much sadness this week that I learned of ‘Yellow Buses’, of Bournemouth, going out of business.

An operator I have followed, visited and ridden on for over 50 years.

The colours yellow and in later years blue that adorned the fleet reflected the yellow of the beach and the blue of the sky that always seemed to be sunny.

Now, no more.

In the early 1950s ‘Bournemouth Corporation Transport’  (which went on to become ‘Yellow Buses’ etc.) had a new depot built on the outskirts of the town to house its growing fleet of buses.

Single storey and spaciously laid out it was ideal for its purpose.

Back in the ‘good old days’ the company allowed enthusiasts, and anyone else who felt inclined, to visit and wander round taking photographs etc.

If memory serves me right it used to be on summer Wednesday afternoons only.

Most of the then service fleet were out earning their keep which meant that the old, weird and wonderful were easier to get at!

So, in happier days, here is some of what I saw.

XRY 202 ‘Bournemouth Omnibus Company’. Leyland PD3 / Metro Cammell Carriage  & Wagon Co.

on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Not quite what it seems.

Despite the pseudo ‘Tilling Stevens’ radiator, it is definitely a Leyland PD3 underneath it all.

It has a long and complex history and to access it ‘Google’ XRY 202 and click on

‘Yellow Buses-Yellow Wednesdays XRY 202’

It is worth the effort!

on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

New in 1950.

At the time Bournemouth specified two staircases with two doors allowing passengers to board at the front and leave by the rear.

Still in my view the most efficient way of loading and emptying a bus.

These days, I suppose that the majority of photographers store their images on hard drives on various computers, tablets etc.

So it was with some surprise that I recently discovered some of my older images in that most familiar of storage locations, an old shoe box.

All of the images were taken on film in the days before I had graduated to automatic digital cameras so any slight focus or colour problems are due entirely to me.

So enjoy this selection dating back many years.

There were rumours that the 2 buses were taken from production intended to go to Belfast which as far as I know has never been confirmed.

Does anyone know ??

‘Scene’ Down Memory Lane once more in Sheffield 3 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

For part 1 see blog posted 24/12/2020, part 2 posted 25/12/2020.

On the 12th. of May 2013. ‘First South Yorkshire’ (FSY) organised a bus event to mark 100 years since the introduction of the motor bus in Sheffield.

It was held at ‘FSYs Olive Grove garage which is adjacent to the ‘Midland Main Line’ about half a mile to the South of Sheffield’s railway station.

A stones throw from the garage is the site of what was Queens Road tram depot where many of Sheffields trams were built and housed.

What is now the bus parking area at Olive Grove for many years was home to ‘Sheffield United Tours’ fleet of luxury coaches which eventually passed to ‘National Travel East’.

A part of Sheffield then that is steeped in the city’s transport history.

Apart from ‘FSY’s current fleet there were samples of earlier Sheffield buses and a good selection of preserved buses.

This selection illustrates former fleet vehicles.

‘Scene’ on another trip ‘Down Memory Lane’, ‘Stevensons of Spath 1’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

It was sometime in the early 1980’s that I had occasion to visit the village of Spath where ‘Stevensons’, a legendary bus operator of that time was based.

Lunchtime saw me there, camera in hand.

So enjoy this selection dating back many years.

‘Stevensons of Spath eventually became ‘Stevensons of Uttoxeter & Burton’ (pronounced Uchetter by the locals) and eventually disappeared into

‘ARRIVA Midlands’.

The star of the day for me was this.

Unregistered (but I think it became Q246 FVT). ‘Stevensons Bus Services’. Leyland Olympian / Eastern Coachworks

on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

This bus was one of the prototype Olympians built by Leyland and bought by ‘Stevensons’ as a bare shell which was fitted out by the company at Spath.

It was unusual for a number of reasons. One was the fitting of Bristol VR front panel.

It eventually became No. 99.

New to ‘Bedwas & Machen U.D.C’The very last low bridge body to be built in the UK.

For those not old enough to remember low bridge buses. The were lowered by means of having four seats abreast upstairs served by a sunken gangway on the offside which intruded into the downstairs saloon.

For those sitting on the offside downstairs it was ready made for banging your head on when leaving your seat.

For those sitting upstairs nearest the nearside window it generally meant climbing over the passenger(s) sat to your right.

An abomination that was resolved by the introduction of the drop centre rear axle as on the Bristol Lodekka, Dennis Loline and the Albion Lowlander.

Pictured I think at Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum.

‘Scene’ in Preservation. ‘Sheffield Corporation Transport Department’ (SCTD) on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

This is my 500th. blog and to mark the occasion I am going back to my roots.

To where the interest in transport all began for me in The City of Sheffield where I was born and grew up.

It was always a puzzle to me how in what was then a dirty city, from smoke, soot, smog etc. why anyone should choose a colour scheme that was mainly cream.

Having done so to then go to the lengths that were gone to to keep the fleet clean was quite remarkable.

Should any old ‘SCTD’ employees get to read this, I take my hat off to you.

You did a fantastic job.

‘Scene’ at The Greater Manchester Museum of Transport.

Located on Boyle Street adjacent to one of ‘First Manchester’s garages. It is easily visited by catching the tram heading for Bury as far as Queens Road, leaving the station, turn left and walk until Boyle St. appears on you right hand side.

A useful bonus is that if you hold a current Greater Manchester Wayfarer day ticket, entrance is free.

Everything is packed cheek by jowl but it really is a wonderland particularly for bus enthusiasts.

Dating back to Victorian times, this Horse Bus was operated by Manchester Carriage & Tramways Company and dates back to 1890.

This must have been one of the last half cab buses built.

Another bus from the fleet of ‘MCT’ is this Leyland PD2/40 with Burlingham bodywork being No. 3496 in ‘MCT’ service.

One of the features of double deckers in the fleet was the distinctive layout of the destination blinds. A layout that was the same on generations of buses.

Like many other local buses it went on to serve in the combined fleets in Manchester in the SELNEC (South East Lancs. North East Cheshire) fleet which preceded todays ‘Greater Manchester’ operation.
