‘Scene’ in the Italian city of Trieste on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

Trams only feature occasionally on my blogs. The most recent being from Nottingham last year.

There is only one image and that is a bit special having been recorded by my nephew Paul Basford whilst on holiday in Italy recently.

The Trieste-Opicina tramway (part of the city’s network) is unusual in that it is a hybrid of tramway and funicular railway.

For much of the journey, the system operates as a conventional tramway running on the streets and on reserved track.

On the steepest sections, with a maximum gradient of  26% the trams are pushed uphill and braked downhill by a pair of cable tractors remotely operated by the tram drivers.

Tram 405 is one of six that work the line and was built in 1935 by ‘Officine Meccaniche Stanga’ powered by ‘Brown Boveri’ electrical components.
