‘Scene’ on the Achensee Bahn in the Austrian Tirol on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

The ‘Achensee Bahn’ is a steam hauled tourist railway.

It runs from the town of Jenbach which lies on the main line from Innsbruck to Salzburg and onto Vienna.

It uses the Swiss Riggenbach system of rack and pinion traction to get up the hill from Jenbach to terminate at the side of the ‘Achensee’ near to the town of Pertisau.

The ‘Achensee’ being being a lake which is the largest in the Tirol.

The mainline station is behind me.

What two electric railcars parked far left are doing there, I don’t know.

I think they were either stored or being used as office accommodation.

Also pictured are 3 of the 6 coaches the line possesses.

There were 2 loco’s in steam on the day.

‘Theodor’ was up the line on another service whilst ‘Hannah’ was somewhere to my left, hence all the smoke.

According to the plate on the cab side, Hannah was built at the

‘Wiener Lokomotivfabrik’ at Florisdorf in Vienna in 1878.

‘Wikipedia’ has it the she is an amalgam of a previous loco in the fleet and a second hand boiler from Poland. Take your pick.

The rack and pinion cogwheel is shown clearly under the centre of the loco.
