‘Scene’ on the Yorkshire Coast. 1 Scarborough on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

I don’t often get to the Yorkshire Coast. So a day in Scarborough made a pleasant change.

The weather was warm, sunny and dry and the town was very busy.

The main local operator is ‘East Yorkshire Motor Services’ although they use the title ‘Scarborough & District’ on buses that are based in the town.

Their main and long standing competitor comes in the shape of ‘Shoreline Suncruisers’ Both are very active in the open top market.

‘Scene’ on a Soggy day in 'Skeggy’

Or Skegness to give the town its full title.

It started raining the moment we arrived and it didn’t stop until we were well on our way home.

That as we all know is life in the UK !

A statue of the Jolly Fisherman for long the image of Skegness stands outside the railway station which itself is located at the side of the bus station.

The Jolly Fisherman

Based on a poster drawing done in 1908 by John Hassall for the Great Northern Railway to promote Skegness and the GNR’s services to the town.

It is one of the best and most famous holiday advertisements ever drawn. Usually paired with the line “Skegness is so bracing”.

John Hassall was paid the sum of 12 guineas for his work and died in 1948, penniless!

Skeggy has always been known for its open top bus services. and new to the fleet this year is.

YJ04 FZE

A Volvo B7TL with Wright Eclipse Gemini bodywork that was new to ‘First Chester and Wirral’  (FC&W) as its 32457.

‘Stagecoach (SC) took over the  ‘FC&W’ in 2012/13 and the bus moved to Scotland with  ‘Stagecoach Fife’ before moving South (losing its roof in the process) and coming to ‘Stagecoach East Midlands (SEM).

One of five that have joined the fleet and they are as far as I know the first Wright Gemini bodies to be converted to part open top in the country.

YJ04 FZE

I believe there is another Wright bodied Volvo B7TL on open top duties in Skegness with three more scattered across Lincolnshire. The rest of the ‘SEM’ open top fleet I saw were all Alexander ALX 400 bodied Dennis Trident 2’s which were originally with the Grimsby Cleethorpes Transport operation (part of Stagecoach) and were,

PIW 4456 formerly T376 FUG named Sandy. Seen navigating its way round Skegness’s famous Clock Tower.

A Volvo B7TL with East Lancs Vyking bodywork came into the fleet when Stagecoach took over Road Car (previously Lincolnshire Road Car Co.) in 2005.

I have included this image for its interest despite it being pouring down with rain when I took it.

A Hestair Duple 425 working for ‘Whitehead of Conisborough’.

Originally G631 CRL with ‘Jennings’ of Bude’, it must be one of the last Duple bodies in regular service.

Built with running units supplied by Dennis which at that time were also part of the Hestair group.

‘Scene’ in Cambridge

I WOULD LIKE TO START THIS BLOG WITH AN APOLOGY TO THOSE OF YOU WHO BECOME USED TO MORE REGULAR 'BLOGS'.

SUFFICE TO SAY THAT I HAVE HAVE SUFFERED CONSIDERABLE TECHNICAL PROBLEMS THAT WHILST NOT YET FULLY RESOLVED AT LEAST ALLOW ME TO CONTINUE.

MANY THNKS ARE DUE TO MY SON ANDREW FOR THE TIME HE HAS (AND IS GOING TO) PUT IN TO GET THINGS UP AND RUNNING ONCE MORE.

‘Scene’ in Cambridge

A trip to this great University city to see and sample the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway (CGB) allowed time in the city to look at more straightforward transport provisions.

FJ12 FYL

A Volvo B9R with Caetano Levante bodywork on its way Norwich.

FJ12 FYL

The major provider of bus services in the city are ‘Stagecoach East’ who are represented by.

The other main operator is ‘Go Whippet’ who have a history dating back to 1919. Working from a modern depot at Swavesway, the company was taken over by  the Australian company ‘Tower Transit Systems’ in 2014.

X471 AHE

A Scania L94UB with Wright Solar bodywork.

An interesting bus which at one time worked for APCOA (a car park operator) and then had a spell with ‘Arriva North West’ in Liverpool wearing an all white livery.

V202 OOE

A Volvo B7TL with Alexander ALX 400 bodywork that started life with ‘London United’ as its VA79.

V202 OOE

‘Stagecoach East’ operate a number of Park & Ride services into the city. They are distinguished by wearing different coloured liveries.

All the buses I saw were Dennis Trident 2’s with ‘ADL’ Enviro 400 bodywork.

AE07 KZA

In a fairly neutral grey livery and thoughtfully carrying a broadside map which illustrates the network.

Since all the other services buses are painted in bright colours and carry specific route branding. I am assuming that the grey liveried buses operate as spares and can be seen working on any of the routes as vehicle availability demands.

Wearing a blue based livery and branded for the Trumpington P&R site.

‘Scene’ in Burton on Trent (BoT) 2 ‘Arriva’

BoT is perhaps best known for beer brewing. Just off the A38. Burton has 3 bus major companies plying for trade. ‘Arriva’  the subject of this blog. ‘Midland Classic’ (see blog dated 17/12/2014) and ‘trentbarton’ who will have a turn later.

Apart from the buses Burton also lies on the railway line from Derby to Birmingham. The other watery connection is that the Trent and Mersey canal also runs through the town.

The last time I was in town (2 years ago) ‘Arriva’ seemed to have a lot of Optare Versa’s in service. This time there was the odd one but there seemed to be more ‘heavyweight’ buses around. Various Wright bodied DAF/VDL’s for example.

FJ13 FYW

A VDL SB200 with Wright Pulsar 2 bodywork. Branded for the X38, a joint service with ‘trentbarton’ (tb) that links BoT with Derby. ‘tb’s share of the route is generally run with Optare Tempo’s.

P1140200

W227 SNR

A Dennis Dart SLF with Alexander ALX 200 bodywork which was new to ‘Arriva’ in Derby.

P1140204

SK52 MLN

A Dennis Dart with Plaxton Mini Pointer 2 bodywork.

P1140390

FL63 DXE

Another VDL SB200/Wright combination. Branded for the ‘BoT’- Leicester service which runs under a variety of route numbers.

Apparently, the bus leaves Burton going to Coalville where the number changes and the destination becomes Leicester. I suspect that it something to do with the licensing arrangements otherwise why not just refer to it as a Burton- Leicester service?

P1140331

P1140210

P1140333

FJ58 KXL

A Volvo B9TL with Wright Eclipse Gemini bodywork. it was new to Derby and transferred to Burton in 2013.

P1140262

YJ09 LBK

An Optare Versa V1110 that at one time worked on the X38 Burton-Derby service in full X38 branding.

P1140257

BF52 NZV

A DAF SB200 with Wright Commander bodywork. It was new to Wellington in Shropshire, coming to Burton in 2010.

P1140291

FL63 DXH

One more of the VDL SB200/Wright combination.

P1140212

BF52 NZZ

Another DAF SB200 with Wright Commander bodywork. Like NZU it was new to Wellington in Shropshire, coming to Burton in 2010.

P1140227

BF52 NZU

Yet another DAF SB200 with Wright Commander bodywork. It was new to Wellington in Shropshire, moving on to Coalville in 2011 and coming back to Burton in the same year.

P1140379

FJ13 FYX

Another VDL SB200 with Wright Pulsar 2 bodywork.

P1140258

FL63 DXG

Another of the same.
