‘Scene’ in Chesterfield again on Dennis Basford’srailsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

One of my favourite spots for bus watching where something interesting always seems to turn up.

Chesterfield is very much on the tourist trail and visiting coaches are often booked into the parking bays in Beckingham Way, Coach Station.

Working a ‘comet’ branded service from Derby, usually the duty of a Volvo B7RLE / Wright Eclipse.

More of a shooting star than a comet perhaps?

The brighter red livery is slowly spreading across the non-branded fleet.

All it needs now is the addition of cream to restore it back to the ‘Trent’ livery of sixty years ago.

What, I hear you ask, is interesting about this?

Well, it is a short bodied 8.9 metre long bus seating only 29 passengers and unusual in a ‘Stagecoach’ fleet.

‘Scene’ at ‘Coach & Bus UK19’, Part 10 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

The touring and day coach market seems to be occupied more and more by builders based outside the UK.

Whilst I respect that buyers and operators should have the right to choose what they want for their fleets it would be a sad day to see the UK coach builders extinguished.

We have seen it in so many of our industries and I would hate to see this particular industry go.

I suspect that Plaxtons employees thank their lucky stars that they are part of the ‘Alexander Dennis’ organisation even though they may be Canadian owned.

So, to coaches then, and a colourful selection.

More tomorrow.

The ‘Cygnus’ has been around for some years.

One of my local operators, ‘Slacks Travel’ of Matlock have a number on both MAN and VDL chassis.

I have ridden on most of them and a very comfy ride they provide.

The frontal styling has been updated and it looks an attractive coach.

Not as ‘glamorous’ as the i6 or i8 nevertheless it makes for a very competent and stylish coach.

‘Scene' in the service of ‘Slacks Coaches’ of Matlock on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

‘Slacks Coaches’ of Matlock are local to me in Derbyshire.

The company has always been a family business with a history stretching back to the 1950’s.

My wife and I have been satisfied customers for many of those years and it was on one of ‘Slacks’ short breaks that the coach featured in this blog was scheduled to operate.

This is ‘Slacks’ first new coach for a long time and another first is that the combination of the VDL SB4000 / Beulas Cygnus is the first of its kind in the UK.

The two rear rows of seats are elevated by about six inches above the rest of the seats. This giving passengers occupying them a better view forward. I presume that this is to give sufficient clearance in the engine compartment below.

An unusual feature these days is a seperate drivers door

It also introduces a new style of livery to the company albeit still on a dark green base.

A detailed article and driving test were published in the transport magazine ‘Route One’ in October 2018 to where I would refer anyone who wants to read further.

The Safari is handsome coach which to me at least is seldom seen on the roads.
