A recent day out took friend Peter Rose and myself into pastures new when the transport delights of ‘Sandtoft Trolleybus Museum’ were explored

I have attended a number of SHOWBUS events over the years but this was the first time I had attended one at the Hertfordshire County Showgound.

 

The 50th. show and if we are to believe what we read, the last.

 

It would be a great pity if the reputation the SHOWBUS name has built up over the years were to be lost but we shall have to wait and see.

 

‘London Country Bus Services Ltd’ were the successors to the ‘Green Line’ operation of ‘London Transport’.

 

It came into being when on January 1st. 1970, all ‘Green Line’ services were transferred to the new, nationalised, Transport Holding Company.

In the early 1960s, ‘London Transport’ were heavily committed to half cab RT and RM double deckers.

 

The Leyland Atlantean and Daimler Fleetline had already built up a wide following across the rest of the country, so ‘London Transport’ ordered small batches of both models for trials purposes.

 

XF1 (Experimental Fleetline) being the first of its kind.

Located at Ruddington, which lies five miles to the South of Nottingham.

 

It is also home to the ‘Great Central Railway-Nottingham’.

 

A large site which houses an extensive collection of vintage buses as well as standard gauge and miniature railway vehicles and artefacts.

 

Originally a station on the ‘Great Central Railway’  extension line that linked Sheffield with London via Nottingham and Leicester.

Very much a one off where ‘NCT’ explored various ideas for incorporation in future buses.

 

The angled destination blind to make it easier to see. A single door to only allow one person at a time to board. Double doors at the exit. The very substantial front bumper assembly to protect the driver and reduce frontal collision damage.

It has appeared before in my blog when it was at ‘Showbus’ in 2016.

 

Here is what I wrote at the time and I have not changed my opinion since.

 

‘The Delaine’ working out of Bourne in Lincolnshire has been an independent bus operator going back over a century.

 

‘Buses Illustrated’ for May 1966 drew attention to a new double decker having been delivered to ‘The Delaine’ registered DTL 489D.

 

This was the first rear engined double decker to join the fleet.

 

It was further recorded in the magazine that,

 

   “the superb finish” (of the Willowbrook bodywork) “has to be seen to be believed.”

 

It went on, 

 

    “Surely this must be the most beautifully painted and trimmed Atlantean in the country.”

 

 

It doesn’t look bad now, 55 years later.

‘Scene’ in Sheffield Transport Interchange on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

 

‘First South Yorkshire’ (FSY) has recently started to re-paint its fleet in an approximation of the liveries of the major operators that made up the fleet when South Yorkshire PTE (which eventually became ‘FSY’) was launched in 1974.

 

These were the Corporation Transport Departments of Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield.

 

For those not familiar with the previous liveries they were,

 

Doncaster, mainly dark red with a purple trim, Rotherham, dark blue and cream and Sheffield azure blue and cream.

 

Dark red with a purple trim might seem a bit of an odd combination but it was smart, stylish and applied in an imaginative way (see final image).

April 2021 sees the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of what has become ‘Hulleys of Baslow’, the well known Derbyshire based independent bus operator.

 

To celebrate the occasion, a gathering of some of ‘Hulleys’ past and present fleet is being planned to take place in Chatsworth Park, Derbyshire on Sunday the 25th. of April 2021.

 

Founded by Henry Hulley, the ownership of the company has changed hands more than once but the name of its founder has survived all the changes.

 

I have known the company for over 60 years and during that time the buses initially painted (in my time at least) in shades of red and red and grey have been a fixture in Rutland Square in Bakewell.

 

These days, the livery has changed to cream and dark blue. 

 

A combination that ‘Hulleys’ inherited from ‘South Notts’ when buses were bought from that fleet and the livery adopted.

 

Although Hulleys ‘main line’ is probably its service number 170 from Bakewell to Chesterfield via Baslow.

 

The company operates widely across North Derbyshire, to Sheffield and in the past year to Manchester.

I believe it was new to ‘Nottingham Corporation Transport’, as a double deck bus before being re bodied before passing  to ‘South Notts’ prior to coming to ‘Hulleys’.

Interestingly working an X67 service to Mansfield.

 

The X67 was a joint service run by ‘Hulleys’, ‘East Midland Motor Services’ and ‘Lincolnshire Road car Co’. called ‘Lincman’. 

 

Which saw Lincoln linked with Manchester via Mansfield and Chesterfield. 

 

Hence the name.

 

It was an ambitious venture which unfortunately didn’t last.

On the 12th. of May 2013. ‘First South Yorkshire’ (FSY) organised a bus event to mark 100 years since the introduction of the motor bus in Sheffield.

 

It was held at ‘FSYs Olive Grove garage which is adjacent to the

‘Midland Main Line’ about half a mile to the South of Sheffield’s railway station. 

 

A stones throw from the garage is the site of what was Queens Road tram depot where many of Sheffields trams were built and housed.

 

What is now the bus parking area at Olive Grove for many years was home to 

‘Sheffield United Tours’ fleet of luxury coaches which eventually passed to ‘National Travel East’.

 

A part of Sheffield then that is steeped in the city’s transport history.

 

This blog deals exclusively with buses of my generation. The blue and cream fleet.

 

Most of these buses have been illustrated in my blogs in the past but they were there on the day so I make no apology for including them again.

 

It is interesting to note that at the time of writing ‘FSY’ are experimenting with re-introducing elements of blue and cream to the current fleet.

Sheffield operated 3 ‘fleets’ all in the blue and cream livery.

 

The ‘A’ fleet were vehicles owned by ‘Sheffield Corporation Transport’ and operated within the city boundary.

 

The ‘B’ fleet were vehicles that were jointly owned by ‘Sheffield Corporation Transport’ and ‘British Railways’ and operated from Sheffield to destinations outside the Sheffield boundary but that were considered ‘local’ ie the routes to Bakewell and other Peak District destinations.

 

The ‘C’ fleet that was wholly owned by ‘British Railways’ (BR) and used on longer distance services e.g. Manchester, Leeds, Gainsborough etc.

 

Prior to 1948 the ‘Railway’ holdings were held by the LMS and/or the LNER and passed to BR at nationalisation.

It is hardly surprising that a bus museum located about 30 miles away from Edinburgh should attract so many buses from that great City.

Although built to resemble a full fronted bus both the right hand panel of the windscreen and the panel above the front wheel are unglazed.

 

This feature was presumably to allow easier access to the engine for maintenance purposes.

 

The chassis dates from 1943 when it was delivered to ‘London Transport’ as No. G77 registered GLL 577 with utility bodywork by Park Royal.

 

Purchased by ‘ECT’ in 1952 and re-bodied.
