‘Scene’ in Stamford, ‘Centrebus’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Stamford in Lincolnshire is a beautiful town. The golden stone of many of its elegant buildings gives a Cotswold-ish feel.

The bus station is well situated in the town centre being almost circular which gives the photographer a variety of vantage points depending on where the sun is.

‘Scene’ in Melton Mowbray on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

It has been several years since I last featured Melton Mowbray so it was due for a re visit.

The town, situated in North Leicestershire is more famous for Stilton cheese and Pork Pies than it is for its buses but it was the buses I was here to see. (I also sampled the cheese as well).

Very much a ‘Centrebus’ town, there is only one service operated by another operator which is ‘Arriva Midlands’ service 5A to Leicester.

‘Centrebus’ major route through the town is the ‘five counties’ branded service19 that links Nottingham with Peterborough. A journey of nearly 60 miles.

The ‘five’ counties incidentally are Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.

On the day I was there, it was being operated with a mixture of buses. (see also blog dated 27/04/2017 which covers an additional bus on this service).

On my previous visits to Melton, the local services were being operated by Plaxton bodied Mini Pointer Dennis Darts.

These seem to have gone and have been replacedby baby Optare Solo’s.

‘Scene’ Out and About on ‘Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Most of my regular readers will know that from time to time, I publish blogs that illustrate a series of articles about days out by bus.

These are written for a local community magazine that is circulated locally around the part of Derbyshire where I live.

It is called ‘all Things Local’, which is published bi-monthly and generally runs to about 10,000 copies per print run.

All these days out involve a degree of research which generally starts with maps and timetables and eventually requires a day out for me (and sometimes my wife Barbara) to make sure that all goes well.

I have recently researched a day out that took me from home to Derby, onto Loughborough, then Melton Mowbray and back via Nottingham.

Some of what I saw along the way were.

‘trentbarton’ have recently put 8 Alexander Dennis Ltd. (ADL) Enviro 200MMC’s on its ‘the mickleover‘ service (see blog published 09/12/2016).

However, this was the first time I had seen this particular vehicle.

Similarly, Heanor based ‘yourbus’ have put a batch of ‘ADL’ Enviro 200’s into service.

These being to Euro 5 specification with the old style of bodywork. (See blog published 24/11/2016).

This again was the first time I had seen this particuler vehicle.

Loughborough usually produces something from the always immaculate fleet of Paul S. Winson  (PSW) and today was no exception.

Originally T420 XVO, with ‘Nottingham City Transport’ then YNR 778 with ‘PSW’ it eventually became T8 PSW.

My transport to Melton Mowbray was provided by ‘Centrebus’ on this bus which was bought from the previously mentioned ‘PSW’ in 2015.

Melton Mowbray, is an interesting town in bus terms and will appear in a blog of its own in the future.

The only route operated by ‘Arriva’ is No. 5A and it goes to Leicester. I saw three departures which were all operated by ‘ADL’ Enviro 400MMC’s.

At this point, rain set in so it was home via Nottingham.

‘Scene’ recently in Loughborough part 2

This further small selection taken ‘recently’ brings together two brief visits. One at the very end of 2013 and another in the first week in February.

Loughborough, a small compact town sits astride the A6 North of Leicester and South of Derby.

It is blessed with a wide selection of bus operators who provide a busy and colourful scene.

‘Centrebus’ operate 2 routes from Loughborough. No. 8 serves Grantham via Melton Mowbray whilst the other No. 154 serves Leicester via Swithland.

PAZ 9346

Probably the oldest bus on display is this 1995 vintage DAF SB220 with Northern Counties Paladin bodywork.

Part of the ‘Centrebus’ fleet. It arrived with them in 2011 when ‘Centrebus’ took over ‘Kimes Of Folkingham’ who’s livery it still carries.

It was new to ‘Speedlink Airport Services’ as M848 RCP.

A ‘Centrebus’ Alexander Dennis  Ltd. (ADL) Enviro 200 liveried for the ‘Shore Link’ service that links Oakham with Uppingham and Rutland Water is a long way from its normal haunts as it waits departure time on the Grantham service.

‘Buses’ magazine for February 2014 has a comprehensive article by John Marsh starting on page 24 for anyone wishing to read further.

A Wright Streetlite W/F operating for ‘Roberts’ of Hugglescote in Leicestershire. It is one of 3 that came from ‘Menzies’ at Heathrow.

I had the pleasure of visiting Roberts premises last year on a PSV Circle organised outing to find they have a varied fleet and a large yard that was full of elderly Metrobuses (or should that be Metrobi ?)

P1080907

Nottingham City Transport (NCT) operate service number one. The route travels out over Trent Bridge, then on through Gotham where the South Notts (SN) bus company was based.

South Notts were taken over by NCT in 1991, 65 years to the day after SN ran its first service.

The normal buses on this service carry normal NCT livery with dark blue branding which I like to think is a nod to the old SN livery of dark blue and cream.
