‘Scene’ at Showbus 24/09/2022 /2 London Transport’s RT Class on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

I have attended a number of SHOWBUS events over the years but this was the first time I had attended one at the Hertfordshire County Showgound.

The 50th. show and if we are to believe what we read, the last.

It would be a great pity if the reputation the SHOWBUS name has built up over the years were to be lost but we shall have to wait and see.

The RTs were ‘London Transport’s standard double decker of the late 1930s, through the 40s and 50s.

They worked alongside AEC Routemasters during the 1960s and 70s.

Built by AEC in London, Leyland in Lancashire, Weymann in Birmingham, Cravens in Sheffield and Saunders Roe on the Isle of Anglesey they were produced in their thousands.

The last one not being withdrawn until 1979.

Nicknamed the ‘Roof Box’ RT after the route number box fitted above the upper deck windows.

The white painted front wings were added to make them more visible during wartime blackout conditions.

Most RTs were built to the then standard width of 7 feet 6, inches however Leyland built 500 to a width of 8 feet which was the width that eventually became the UK standard for many years.

These became the RTWs (wide).
