Question? When is a military transport aircraft not a military transport aircraft?
Answer. When it is a military transport aircraft on lease to a civilian operator.
Nine Airbus Voyager KC2/3’s were acquired for the Royal Air Force for use in the air tanker role between 2011 and 2014 serialed ZZ330 to ZZ338
In addition four Airbus A.330-243’s were bought and allocated the serials ZZ339 to ZZ342.
The operation of the aircraft is managed by a civilian contractor called ‘Air Tanker’ and part of their remit is to lease out to civilian operators spare capacity that is not immediately needed.
An excellent arrangement that gets the best utilization out of the fleet.
It should be stressed that although allocated a military serial the aircraft has not as far as I can determine ever flown with its serial on display although it has flown in the RAF’s grey colour scheme.
