‘Scene’ Today (Sunday 07/08/2022) at Midland Railway Butterley on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

A bit of a bonus blog then.

My wife and I usually go out for a walk on Sunday mornings and sometimes included is a look over the railway bridge at Butterley to see what is happening.

Usually there is not a lot going on, but today we got lucky.

When the Class 142 Diesel Railcars were withdrawn, most passengers who had had to suffer them breathed a sigh of relief.

Built on 4 wheeled chassis with bodywork that had its origins in the Leyland National bus they were never the most comfortable of vehicles to ride in.

On welded track, they were bearable but on the ‘old fashioned’ sectional track, their to and fro motion, because of the track, earned them the nickname of ‘Nodding Donkeys’.

I remember a journey from Barnsley to Sheffield on one of these sets where the rocking motion, led to a bout of sickness the like of which I had only previously experienced in a North Sea gale.

So, fast forward a few months and they have started to re-appear on heritage railways, where they are seen as useful additions to the rolling stock roster.
