‘Scene’ in Chatsworth Park, Derbyshire 1 ‘Hulleys of Baslow’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

There cannot be many readers / viewers of my blog who are unaware that 2021 marks the 100th. anniversary of the founding of ‘Hulleys of Baslow’.

It had been intended to mount a bus rally in Chatsworth nearer to the original anniversary date but this was set back to September 26th. 2021 because of the Covid-19 crisis.

The buses I saw on the day split nicely into,

Those owned by ‘Hulleys’, preserved buses and those that were visiting or passing through.

I do not claim that those pictured were the only buses on display because there were others that were out visiting elsewhere that I would have missed.

I have identified this bus as being part of ‘Hulleys’ fleet.

However, it has been stripped of its ‘Hulleys’ branding and number. It has been with the company since 2014. Added to that, this bus is a VDL product in a fleet that appears to be standardising on Volvo B7RLE’s. It would seem to me that it has either left or is about to leave the fleet.

Time will tell.

‘Scene’ in Newcastle upon Tyne 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Friend Peter Rose recently spent some time in this great City to attend a concert.

These days, he takes his pictures on his iPhone but whatever he uses the results are excellent.

He has forwarded the following images which are reproduced with his permission and my thanks.

Looking at the times the images were taken, 20 minutes would seem to cover the lot.

Not a bad haul on a beautiful day.

To check the details of what is in the pictures, I have made use of ‘Go-North East’s official fleetlist.

It is a work of art with every bus listed in detail and then it is colour coded to identify the livery that every bus carries.

Brilliant!

Specially repainted to represent a vintage bus of the inter-war period even to the extent of painting on a radiator with the company’s name cast into the radiator top.

It was customary do this at that time. Manufacturers such as ‘Tilling Stevens’ did it.

In that case, It didn’t matter who owned the bus, you knew straight away who had built it.

It has appeared before in my blog when it was at ‘Showbus’ in 2016.

Here is what I wrote at the time and I have not changed my opinion since.

‘The Delaine’ working out of Bourne in Lincolnshire has been an independent bus operator going back over a century.

‘Buses Illustrated’ for May 1966 drew attention to a new double decker having been delivered to ‘The Delaine’ registered DTL 489D.

This was the first rear engined double decker to join the fleet.

It was further recorded in the magazine that,

“the superb finish” (of the Willowbrook bodywork) “has to be seen to be believed.”

It went on,

“Surely this must be the most beautifully painted and trimmed Atlantean in the country.”

It doesn’t look bad now, 55 years later.

So here it is, enjoy !

I don’t usually post images of overall white buses unless there is something unusual about them.

There are a number of them, so it’s not a one off.

White buses in any ‘Stagecoach’ fleet are unusual because their fleets are so standardised which is what makes them stand out.

Should anyone out there  know the reason, and Email would be appreciated please.

I rather like the floral displays so included them.

I would suggest that anyone interested should Google ‘BET Federation’ and go to the Wikipedia file.

The 22nd. of August 2021 saw the 60th. anniversary of the opening of Olive Grove Garage in Sheffield.

To celebrate ‘FSY’ put on a ‘Family Fun Day’.

As might be expected, ‘FSY’ was well represented with buses from the present fleet with others either from the past or representing something from the past.

This bus has appeared in my blog before but I make no apology for including this magnificent vehicle again.

Congratulations to the owner/s who keep this 67 year old bus in this condition.

This was the PTE’s second attempt at a livery which did not include either blue or red which were the major colours in the liveries of Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, the PTE’s constituent companies.

The first attempt featured a much paler coffee colour which to say the least looked wishy washy.

This stronger version was soon introduced to the same layout as before and looked much better.

Another of ‘FSY’s heritage liveries.

The addition of the ’s in the company title was interesting at the time.

‘South Yorkshire’ (the civil authority, not the bus company) for some time, as a social measure charged uneconomic fares to which the government of the time objected and tried to force a fares increase.

The company added the ’s as a reminder to the government who the buses actually belonged too and that they were not the government’s.

An attractive livery though!
