The ‘WSR’ at 20 miles, is the longest ‘Heritage’ steam railway in England.
Running from Taunton to Watchet originally and then being extended to the terminus at Minehead.
Minehead these days is the main operating base and there is a Museum and some rolling stock storage at Washford which is well worth a visit.
Minehead is also the location where all the images in this blog were taken.

A very interesting loco in that it started out as 2-6-2 tank locomotive No. 5193 built in 1934 at Swindon.
Withdrawn in 1962 and rescued from Woodhams scrapyard at Barry in 1979, it was bought by the ‘WSR’ in 1999 who decided in 2000 to rebuild it as a tender loco.
This was a class of locomotive that was NOT built by the ‘GWR’ but might well have been being a smaller version of ‘GWR’ class 4300 which was built by the GWR.
It probably qualifies as the largest ‘Kit conversion’ ever.

Built at Swindon in 1950 (post Nationalisation) it was withdrawn in 1965, rescued from Woodhams scrapyard at Barry in 1974 and preserved initially at Oswestry.
Since then it has been overhauled twice and has been at the ‘WSR’ since 2018.

In June 2011 it was re-named ‘Norton Manor’ after the the nearby No.40 Royal Marine Commandos base at Norton Fitzwarren.
