Scene in Oxford 3 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

All the images in this blog are of buses registered to subsidiaries of the ‘Go-Ahead’ group.

Being operated by ‘City of Oxford Motor Services’ or ‘Thames Travel’.

I have been taking photographs of buses in Oxford for some years and I have always been fortunate in having dry weather.

This particular day was in late autumn with a clear, blue and sunny sky.

The only problem is that Oxford is a historic city with narrow streets and many tall buildings which between them create a variety difficulties with shadows.

As always, it is all about making the best of what you have.

I hope you enjoy this selection.

Originally built for fellow ‘Go-Ahead’ group member ‘Southern Vectis’ (SV) but but due to the late delivery of Oxfords own buses, four were diverted to Oxford where they ran for a while in ‘SV’ green.

My blog posted 28/05/2016 shows an image of similar bus HW63 FHC No. 251 at work in Oxford in ‘SV’ green.

‘Scene’ On the Rails in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Friend Peter Rose recently returned from holiday based in Hebden Bridge.

An attractive market town set in the valley of the river Calder which shares the steeply sided narrow valley with the Rochdale Canal, the A646 road and the railway line linking Manchester with Bradford and other parts of West Yorkshire.

Because of its location the town does have flooding problems that with the effects of global warming will probably get worse.

These images are reproduced here with his permission and my thanks.

Hebden Bridge railway station was originally opened in October 1840 by the Manchester and Leeds Railway Company.

The current buildings dating from 1893 and were refurbished in 1997.

The signage that was used by the ‘Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway’ at that time was adopted.

‘Scene’ on Wetmore Road, Burton on Trent (BoT) ‘Shades of Blue 1’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Wetmore Road, for those who don’t know, is where the fleet of ‘Midland Classic of Burton’ (‘MC’) is garaged.

Over the weekend of 28/29th August 2021 ‘MC’ held a ‘Heritage Weekend’ to celebrate two anniversaries.

On the Saturday to celebrate 15 years of ‘MC’ operating in Burton.

On the Sunday to celebrate the 95th. anniversary of John Stevenson setting up in business to run buses between Burton and Uttoxeter via Tutbury.

A route that ‘MC’ still operates today.

As well as buses in ‘ ‘Midland Classic of Burton’ and ‘Stevensons’ liveries, there was a selection of both current and preserved vehicles in attendance.

Many were operating journeys on ‘MC’s service No. 401 which is the current route number for the original service dating back to 1926.

After the end of the Second World War, the demand for new bus bodies outstripped the supply.

A number of outside contractors were recruited to fill the gaps.

‘Saunders’ located on the Isle of Anglesey were probably an unlikely choice but there can be no doubt that they built a sound body,

Look at this!

Readers/viewers of my blog might be forgiven for thinking that public transport in ‘BoT’ has always been provided by either ‘Arriva Midlands’, ’midland classic’ or Stevensons’.

There was a time when ‘Burton Corporation’ was the main operator.

Fortunately, two of the companies former vehicles still survive.

In the years following the end of World War Two, new buses were difficult to come by.

One way was to use pre-war chassis or running units under new bodies. This ‘new’ integral coach appearing in 1952.

At the time this practice was regarded as a temporary measure until ‘things got back to normal’. (I knew I had heard that phrase before!!)

Purchased by ‘Thornes’. In 1960 and eventually restored.

Now 70 years old.

Not bad for a ‘temporary measure’.
