‘Scene’ in ‘Network Rail’ service on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Friend Peter Rose has forwarded some more of his excellent railway images for which I thank him.

As usual they are reproduced here unedited by me and with his permission.

9702 ‘Network Rail’ remote train operation vehicle’. Mk. 2F Driving Brake Standard Open. Built at BREL Derby as Brake Standard Open coach No. 9528 in 1974 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk

An interesting vehicle.

One of 10 so produced.

It was converted in 1979 to its current form (DBSO) at BREL Glasgow for use with Class 47/7 locomotives for operating between Glasgow and Edinburgh in push-pull mode.

A service that I had some experience of in the mid 1980’s.

With the introduction of diesel multiple units, they became redundant and moved South to work on  London-Norwich services where eventually the coaches acquired ‘Anglia Rail’ livery.

‘Network Rail’ (NR) bought 5 in 2007.

These, numbered 9701, 9702, 9703, 9708 and 9714 continue in service still working in push-pull mode on ‘NR’ test trains.

It has also carried the number 37267 during its career.

Pictured working the 1500 High Marnham Powergen-Derby RTC on 21/03/2021 in push-pull mode with DBSO No.9702 (see above).

Interestingly, this loco has been modelled by both Bachmann and Heljan In this livery in their OO gauge ranges.

‘Scene’ on Another Trip Down Memory Lane. When ‘trentbarton’ (tb) reached its Centenary /1 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

To mark the centenary of the company, ‘tb’ held an open day at its Langley Mill depot on Sunday 26th. May 2013.

‘trentbarton’, the East Midlands based bus operator started its own journey on 31st. October 1913 when it took over a route from Derby to Ashbourne run by a company called ‘Commercial Car Hirers’ of London who had been running the route since 1909.

The company still runs the route initially as service 1. Then to mark that route’s centenary in 2009 it became ‘the one’ and is now ‘the swift’ and the route now runs beyond Ashbourne to terminate at Uttoxeter. (pronounced ‘Uchetter’ by the locals).

‘trentbarton’ took over the ‘Midland General Omnibus Company’ in 1969 at the formation of the ‘National Bus Company’ and ‘Barton Transport’ in 1989.

It was buses formerly operated by these three companies that made up most (but not all) of the visiting buses on the day.

Today, ‘tb’ is part of the ‘Wellglade’ group along with ‘Kinchbus’ of Loughborough, ‘TM Travel’ of Staveley and ‘notts+derby’ of Derby for whom Langley Mill depot provides engineering support.

This blog deals with the vehicles pictured in ’trentbarton’s Langley Mill workshops.

These days, I suppose that the majority of photographers store their images on hard drives on various computers, tablets etc.

So it was with some surprise that I recently discovered some of my older images in that most familiar of storage locations, an old shoe box.

All of the images were taken on film in the days before I had graduated to automatic digital cameras so any slight focus or colour problems are due entirely to me.

So enjoy this selection dating back many years.

One of two bought (the other one being ALJ 341B No. 41) off the shelf so to speak to cover a vehicle shortage.

There were rumours that the 2 buses were taken from production intended to go to Belfast which as far as I know has never been confirmed.

Does anyone know ??

‘Scene’ in ‘trentbarton’ (tb) service. The Alexander Dennis Ltd. E20D/ADL Enviro200MMC Part 2 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

For part 1 see blog posted12/03/2021.

Since the turn of the 21st. century, ‘tb’s single deck bus intake has comprised mainly of the Wright bodied Scania L94UB, The Wright bodied Volvo B7RLE, the Optare Solo and the Optare Versa.

There have been other purchases such as the Optare Tempo but not in large numbers.

2016 saw the introduction of the Alexander Dennis Ltd. (ADL) E20D / ‘ADL’ Enviro 200MMC.

Since that time upwards of 100 have joined the fleet.

There has also been a batch joining fellow ‘Wellglade’ group member ‘Kinchbus’ which were illustrated in my blog posted 28/08/2020.

The depots in Derby, Nottingham, Sutton-in-Ashfield and Langley Mill have all received new buses so I will show the images in the order in which the buses were delivered.

At the moment, there is a significant number of these buses still on order but rumour has it that they have been delayed for the time being because of the fallout from the Covid 19 pandemic.

‘Scene’ in the Derwent Valley on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

Friend and fellow railway enthusiast Peter Rose has taken his camera for another daily walk and has sent me this selection of images for which I thank him.

Regular readers will know that he likes to see his images in their environment and I must admit that they look good against the rural background.

All the images were taken just South of Ambergate junction on the ‘Midland Mainline’.

The junction used to see Manchester bound trains heading Northwest and Sheffield and beyond bound trains heading Northeast.

Nowadays, the Northeast branch still sees heavy traffic whilst the Northwest branch is just that, a branch line serving the Derwent Valley stations until it terminates at Matlock.

We start with a train that has just joined the main line on its way from Matlock via Derby and Nottingham to Newark Castle.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 regulations virtually banning ‘unnecessary’ travel.

The original ‘NRS’ was opened in 1839 by the ‘Midland Counties Railway’.

Substantially rebuilt in 1904 by the now ‘Midland Railway’ using brick, terracotta

and faience (a form of glazed terracotta) instead of stone.

Further re-worked in 2013 when the trackwork was remodelled resulting in the beautiful building seen today.
