AS PROMISED, THE SIXTH ONE OF ‘A BLOG A DAY’ GOING THROUGH TO NEW YEARS DAY.
For part 1 see blog published 30/11/2018.
In the late 1960’s ‘Walsall Corporation Transport’ produced some unusual designs of which some samples fortunately survive.
I think that this design with two staircases, front and back and two doors taking passengers up/through then down and off is the best design for moving passengers as smoothly and as quickly as possible.
‘Bournemouth Corporation Transport’ did something similar with Leyland Titan PD3 / MCW 8159 EL amongst others.
The dual door bus with the second door within the wheelbase is a poor compromise with blockages between the driver and the bottom of the staircase.
Single door buses can and do take ages to unload then load.
The so called ‘BorisMaster’ for ‘London Transport’ almost got it right with front and back doors and staircases.
Then someone blinked and a third door was put in.
A shame really.
Still, it would probably mean re-designing most ot the bus stations and bus stops in the UK……………….

At 36 feet long with 2 doors and 2 staircases this bus could still seat 86 passengers.
What could have been the bus of the future let down by its unreliable engine.
