The weekend of the 8th. & 9th. of March 2014 saw the railway hold a steam gala. Not in the same league as the 'big boys' (The Great Central the Keighley and Worth Valley etc).
There was nonetheless and interesting afternoon to be had and on the Sunday there was a good turnout.
British Railways standard class 5 4-6-0 No 73129
Built at Derby Works in 1956. One of 30 locomotives equipped with Caprotti valve gear. It worked on the Western region being allocated to Shrewsbury before transferring to the London Midland region at Patricroft in Lancashire from where it was withdrawn in 1967.
From 1967 until 1972 it languished at Woodhams scrapyard at Barry before coming to Butterley in 1973.
After a long and difficult period it was finally restored to steam in 2004.
LMS class 3F ‘Jinty’ 0-6-0T
Formerly numbered 47327 by British Railways. This Midland Railway designed loco was built in 1926 by the North British locomotive Company of Glasgow.
Currently painted as No. 23 of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway in its Prussian blue livery.
Bachmann have produced a model of this loco in this livery.
LMS Ivatt class 2 2-6-0 No. 46521was visiting from the Great Central Railway where it is pictured.
One of a batch of 13 loco’s built at Swindon in 1953. The type was derived from Ivatt’s 2-6-2T loco.
The addition of the tender with its greater capacity for coal and water gave the loco a greater radius of operation.
To provide additional interest this 0-4-0T ‘Whitehead’ was in service. Built in 1908 by Peckett and Sons of Bristol.
