‘Scene’ at ‘Beamish, the Living Museum of the North,’ The Trams on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

I had never been before and I did not know what to expect, but seeing as the visit was included as an excursion in a holiday package, I had nothing to lose.

My main interest, as might be expected, were the transport exhibits but it must be said that there is much more of interest that is worth looking at and, experiencing.

I found myself using the public transport exhibits to access what else is available.

After arriving and entering the complex, there are trams running both clockwise and anti clockwise together with buses running anti clockwise.

One of the buses is fitted with a tail lift for wheelchair based passengers.

They carry you to the various locations where activities; such as the village, the farm, the mine, the railway station the tram and bus depots plus others are located.

I did several circuits of the site on the trams and buses before deciding where I wanted to go.

I found it best to be selective because there is so much to see and do.

It would be difficult to get everything done in any depth on one day.

The Museum has a wide range of trams and buses available to them so on any given day the lineup may vary from the day I visited.

I was talking to a friend recently who follows the blog and he did not realise that by double clicking on the image here it comes up on my flickr page in a larger form.

‘Scene’ at Showbus Another Delectation of Double Deckers on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

I have attended a number of SHOWBUS events over the years but this was the first time I had attended one at the Hertfordshire County Showgound.

The 50th. show and, if we are to believe what we read, the last.

It would be a great pity if the reputation the SHOWBUS name has built up over the years were to be lost but we shall have to wait and see.

’Scene’ Down Memory Lane Once Again. ‘The Opening of Midland Road Bus Garage, Rotherham’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

These days, I suppose that the majority of photographers store their images electronically on computers, tablets etc.

It was with some surprise that I recently discovered some of my older images in that most familiar of storage locations, an old shoe box.

All of the images were taken on film in the days before I had graduated to automatic digital cameras so any slight focus or colour problems are due entirely to me.

So enjoy this selection dating back many years.

Midland Road Bus Garage has been closed since ‘First South Yorkshire’ moved out in 2017.

However, I was there for the opening on September 11th. 1982.

If you want to check the date, the between decks banner in this image tells its own story.

Pictured in a version of the old ‘Doncaster Corporation Transport’ livery.

Which, in my opinion, was a marked improvement over what had gone before.

Dennis re-entered the double deck bus market with the Dominator at a time when Leyland almost had a monopoly of the type.

This did not suit many operators of the time, particularly in Sheffield where SYPTE bought over 300 of them.

‘Scene’ in North London, Finsbury Park Interchange on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk'

Friend Peter Rose has once more been exploring the delights that the capital has to offer.

This time he and his trusty camera have brought us the transport highlights of the area surrounding what was Finsbury Park railway station and has now been elevated to the level of an Interchange.

All the images reproduced here do so with Peter’s permission and my thanks.

The station dates back to the 1850s when the ‘Great Northern Railway’s line from Kings Cross arrived at what was then known as Seven Sisters Road  (Holloway) station.

Becoming Finsbury Park station in July 1861

This was gradually extended North to York by the GNR and eventually to  Edinburgh by the ‘North Eastern’ and ‘North British Railways’ so creating what is now known as The East Coast Main Line.

Underground trains arrived in the form of the ‘Great Northern & City Railway’ in 1904.

Trams and buses have been around since the early days when I suspect that they would have been powered by horses.

Today, such is the volume of traffic that two bus stations are required to service their needs. The bus fleet that services the needs of London consists mainly of double deckers.

There are however, some routes where single deckers are the norm.

‘Scene’ by Peter Rose when Dashing Around Dundee 7 ‘Stagecoach East Scotland’ on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk'

Friend Peter recently visited Dundee and has forwarded these images for me to share with you.

As usual, they are reproduced here with his permission and my thanks.

I suppose that some of the exotica that has gone before in this collection of blogs from Dundee might make this, the final one featuring buses from the local ‘Stagecoach’ fleet seem a bit mundane.

One thing I learned many years ago is that today’s mundane is tomorrows rarity.

When next will I see an LMS Jubilee, a Leyland bodied Leyland PD2 or even a Vickers Viscount?

All, at one time, were my mundane.

Enjoy what you see today for what it is.

‘Scene’ at the ‘Statfold Barn Railway’ (SBR) Buses1 on Dennis Basford’s railsroadsrunways.blogspot.co.uk’

For those who do not know the ‘SBR,’ it is located near Tamworth in Staffordshire.

A privately owned, multi gauge railway system which was operating at least seven locomotives and a tram on the day we were there.

There is also an extensive museum devoted to narrow gauge railway locomotives and artefacts.

Usually holding three running days per year (Spring, Summer and Autumn);

buses, cars, Land Rovers, lorries, military vehicles and steam engines also featured.

Both friend Peter Rose and I found it to be an excellent day out.

Two buses, provided by The Transport Museum, Wythall, Worcestershire were kept busy running a half hourly service into nearby Tamworth.
