The new ADL Enviro 400 MMC ‘Scene’ yesterday (15th. April 2015).

I was lucky enough to see and photograph one of the new Alexander Dennis Ltd. new Enviro 400 MMC’s at ‘Showbus’ last year.

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to see the first production buses to pass my way working for ‘Stagecoach’ in and around Piccadilly Bus Station in Manchester.

Built on the Dennis Trident 2 Euro, the MMC suffix stands for ‘Major Model Change’.

Time and experience will always tell with any new or revised bus but I think them to be handsome vehicles that should do well.

An excellent article about the new Enviro 400 MMC by Alan Millar appeared in the June 2014 issue ‘of Buses’ magazine.

‘Scene’ in Bath Part 2

Bath is one of those cities on the English tourist trail that apart from being a magnet for tourists is the same for buses.

‘First’ group and ‘Wessexbus’ are the major players in the City whilst ‘Bath Bus Company’ is also very active. (See blog dated 06/04/2015).

In addition of course there are the day and tourist coaches which quite literally are here today and gone today.

I first saw this coach in Weymouth in 2014 and it appeared in my ‘blog’ of ‘Southwest Coaches’ dated 17/09/2014. I will repeat what I wrote then.

It has an interesting history being new to ‘The Londoners’ as R986 MGP in 1996. Moving to ‘Hearn’ of Harrow Weald in 2001 as R1 HRN before finally moving to ‘Chivers’ in 2007 and being given its current registration in 2008.

It is surprising to me that whilst being given a new identity in 2008, they didn’t go the whole hog and give it a dateless registration.

‘Scene’ at Butterley

ʻ441ʼ

An 0-4-0 diesel-hydraulic locomotive (302hp, 8 cylinder Rolls Royce diesel engine, hydraulic transmission) built by Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co Ltdʼs Caledonia Works in Kilmarnock in 1959 and one of four such locos (no.440-443) supplied new to High Marnham Power Station in Nottinghamshire.

The other three locos were transferred to Meaford Power Station in Staffordshire by rail in 1969 and no.440 (b.1958) survives at the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway in Yorkshire.

Apart from a short stint at Nechells Power Station in Birmingham in 1971-72 no.441 spent its entire pre-preservation life at High Marnham, being retained for maintenance work after the power stationʼs conversion to ʻmerry-go-roundʼ coal train operation in 1969.

The loco arrived at the Midland Railway-Butterley following the closure of the power station in 2003.

‘Scene’ in Bath Part 1

Bath is one of those cities on the English tourist trail that apart from being a magnet for tourists is the same for buses.

‘First’ group and ‘Wessexbus’ are the major players in the City whilst ‘Bath Bus Company’ are also very active. In addition of course there are the day and tourist coaches which quite literally are here today and gone today.

There is a small bus station adjacent to the railway station where this 'Barbie' liveried Plaxton Pointer 2 bodied Dennis Dart SLF is pictured working for ‘FSA’.

A Volvo B7LA carrying a Wright Eclipse Fusion body again working for ‘FSA’.

Interesting in that this much older bus has gained the new livery whilst the Solo above is a much newer bus in the old livery.

I have passed the same comment before but I cannot understand the fitting of bodywork that partially encloses the rear wheels. It must restrict the maintenance staff when working on the wheels or tyres.

Another of the same only a lot newer. also note that the rear sets of wheels are no longer faired in. Obviously somebody else does not like them either.

‘Scene’ at Meadowhall on the Rails

Meadowhall on the outskirts of Sheffield is a major shopping complex serving the needs of  Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley.

Built at the side of the M1, it is very well provided with transport links boasting its own passenger interchange served by trams, trains and of course buses. The bus scene was dealt with in an earlier 'blog' dated 22nd. March 2015.

There are four platform faces. Two on the mainline which runs East to West linking Sheffield with Rotherham, Doncaster and beyond and two where the line North to Barnsley, Leeds and further North diverges from the mainline.

144011 and 153331

Both in Northern Rail (NR) colours

Are seen standing in platforms 1 and 2 with the Class 144 heading into Sheffield.

Most of the services are run by  ‘NR’ but ‘First TransPennine’ (FTP) also call and ‘Cross Country‘ (CC) run through.

144011 & 153331

144018

Another Class 144 in ‘NR’ colours is seen leaving platform 3 and is about to turn onto the main line into Sheffield.

The Class 144’s date from 1986/7 and were built by a combination of ‘British Rail Engineering Ltd’ (BREL) in Derby and by Walter Alexander of Falkirk in Scotland who supplied the bodies.

They have been refurbished a number of times but seem set to continue for sometime yet.

144018

158797

Again liveried for ‘NR’.

Another product of ‘BREL’ at Derby. Built between 1989 and 1992 seen approaching platform 1 heading into Sheffield.

Amongst the various DMU classes, these are my personal favourite’s being fast, warm and comfortable.

158797

144011

Is seen running into platform 1. These 4 wheel units together with the similar Class 142’s have had some bad press over the years due to ‘rough riding’.

Whilst by the nature of their design, they are not as smooth as bogied stock. I have found that their performance varies according to the state of the track. On welded rail, they are acceptable whilst on jointed rail they are poor. That however is a reflection on the trackwork, not the unit.

144011

142088

Running into platform 2 heading East. The 142’s were a development of the earlier Class 141.

142088

185 151

Of ‘FTP’ calls at platform 2 on its way to Doncaster and then Cleethorpes. Known as ‘Desiro’s, the units were built in Germany by Siemens.

They entered service in 2006/7.

185 151

142017

Another Class 142 resting at Platform 2 on its way East.

142017

221008

Originally operated by ‘Virgin’ as the Virgin Voyager. It still retains the ‘Voyager name but the franchise moved to ‘CC’ trains some years ago.

P1160400

144009

Another of the BREL/Alexander Class 144’s at Platform 2 again.

I sometimes feel that the so called North/South divide is for real when I see the wide range of elderly and sometimes unsuitable rolling stock that is foisted onto Northern passengers.

Particularly when I see the new shiny trains that Southern England enjoys in abundance.

Tram 122

The South Yorkshire ‘Stagecoach Supertram’ terminates at Meadowhall. The close proximity to the main railway line is shown in this view as tram 122 approaches the end of its journey.

The image shows clearly the ‘South West Trains’ inspired livery.

The overhead catenary shows up well.

‘EMT’, ‘Southwest Train’s and the’ Supertram’ operation are part of the ‘Stagecoach’ group.

‘Scene’ in Weston-super-Mare (WsM)

A short break in the Southwest recently enabled a number of interesting days out sampling the local transport scene. They included Bath, Cardiff and Bristol but seeing as we were staying in ‘WsM’, I will start there.

The major group operator is ‘First West of England’ but they get some serious competition from a local operator by the name of ‘Crosville’.

Older readers may well remember ‘Crosville’ as a British Transport Commission company who operated in North and Central Wales as well as North West England from a base at ‘Crane Wharf’ in Chester.

The company disappeared after the early 1970’s when it was broken up after the foundation of the National bus Company of which it became a part.

The present company dates from 2005 when Jonathan Jones-Pratt acquired the dormant company name and set up the current operation based in ‘WsM’.

The livery of green and cream closely follows that of the original company and a number of the original ‘Crosville’s buses still operate in the new ‘Crosville’s heritage fleet.

W975 TRP

A Dennis Dart SLF with Plaxton Pointer 2 bodywork. One of 5, the others being W973 TRP, W968 TRP, W976 TRP and W977 TRP.

They were new to F.E. Thorpe for service 70 in the Wembley area of London which explains the dual doored layout. That company was acquired by ‘Metroline’ in 2004 who kept the buses until 2010. They came to ‘Crosville’ in 2013.

First, I must apologize for the slightly blurred registration plate on this bus. It was the only time I saw it, it was late in the day and the light was going and it was moving quickly. It was one of those where you either get what you can or not at all.

An interesting bus in that it is an  early Wright Gemini bodied Hybrid propulsion bus that started out in the fleet of ‘Arriva London as its HW5’.

One of 3 that joined the fleet in October 2014.

 MIG 6219

A Dennis Trident with Alexander ALX 400 bodywork again that was new to ‘First Capital’ as W935 ULL before moving to ‘First Glasgow’ with the same registration. Now with ‘First Bristol and Avon’ in the old ‘Barbie’ livery.

For some reason, ‘First’s own fleet list shows this bus as being bodied by Plaxton....!

SN63 MYL

An Alexander Dennis Ltd (ADL) E40D with Enviro 400 bodywork wearing branding for

‘First Somerset and Cornwall’s (FSC) X! ‘WsM’ to Bristol express service.

Over the years, I have commented unfavourably about the various liveries worn by ‘First’ group buses. This is the first (no pun intended) that I have actually liked.

SN63 MYL ADL E40D

WA56 FUB

A Dennis Trident with Alexander Enviro 400 bodywork in a slightly revised livery in that the bus while carrying its X branding has lost the number ‘1’.

Presumably, it has been downgraded to normal bus work without having had to spend a lot of money on re painting it.

It was new to ‘First Devon & Cornwall’ and worked on ‘Park & Ride’ services in Plymouth.
